The Global Food Security (GFS) Programme has launched a new £5 million call to support a Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) focused on delivering the next generation of interdisciplinary food systems thinkers. The centre will be funded through the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) Strategic Priorities Fund in partnership with government.
This CDT will deliver a pipeline of skilled individuals who can apply holistic and critical interdisciplinary food systems thinking to health and sustainability challenges in academia, government, business and civil society organisations.
Dr Flora Hetherington, who is managing the Strategic Priorities Fund Food Systems Programme, said “This is a really exciting opportunity to bring together students across the food system to learn from each other and gain experience engaging with food system stakeholders. It will also provide them with a contextualised understanding of their research within the food system as a whole.”
Dr Riaz Bhunnoo, Director of the GFS programme, said: “If we are to tackle the big food system challenges on health and sustainability, we will need the brightest people able to think in an interdisciplinary and systemic way. This CDT will be unique in exposing students to different disciplinary perspectives and stakeholder views, helping to deliver the thought leaders of the future.”
